The trunk is robust, straight and cylindrical, with buttresses. The bark is dark grey with small, thin flakes or scales. The colour of the scales varies from red, dark pink to bright red and exudes a red sap. Its natural habitat is riverine forests and savannah woodlands in tropical Africa.
